CHIPS opens 7th at the box office

CHIPS Box Office

According to weekend box office reports, CHIPS ranked seventh at the box office this weekend. The movie brought in an estimated $7.6 million from 2,464 theaters.  According to Box Office Mojo, CHIPS may not even reach $20 million.  It is reported to have had a $25 million budget.

The movie is a far cry from the box office generated for some other recent movies featuring Michael Peña (such as Ant Man, The Martian, and Fury).  However, Hit & Run, which Dax Shepard’s previously wrote, directed, and starred in with Kristen Bell, only brought in $4.5 million on its opening weekend in 2012…so this is an improvement for him.  (Shepard also wrote, directed, and starred as himself in Brother’s Keeper, but no box office data is available.)

Shepard is slated to write and direct a Scooby Doo movie, S.C.O.O.B., in 2018. The movie will be the first installment in a Warner Bros. “Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe”…because apparently that’s a thing we need.

CHIPS is now playing in theaters. If you want to see it, you’d better hurry because it likely won’t be around long.
