Clarence Gilyard Jr. (Benjamin Webster) was born on Christmas Eve, 1957 in Moses Lake, Washington. He grew up as one of six children in a military family. He attended the Air Force Academy before transferring to Sterling College in Kansas, where he played wide receiver on the football team and also became interested in acting. After his success as an actor, Clarence has given back to the college in many ways, one of which is he paid for new tennis courts for the college.
